Tips for Sticking to Your Grocery Budget

Tips for Sticking to Your Grocery Budget

Grocery shopping can be hard.  Especially when you’re hungry and tired. The last thing on your mind is taking your time to get groceries bought. You want out. And you want out now.  Walking down every aisle is the last thing you want to do in this moment.

Do you ever feel like that when grocery shopping?

I do, almost every single time.

I’m not a fan of grocery shopping. It’s long, the store is usually crowded with people that like to stop in the middle of the way. You can never find the item on sale that you want.  It’s just not my favorite thing to do.

Plus, I find it hard to calculate your total sometimes.  Especially when J comes with me.  I tend to keep my phone out so I can add up my purchases to stay within my budget.  I usually know how much I need to spend before going in so I want to make sure I’m under it by the time I leave.  If J is with me then I have to stick with him or have him tell me the total.  He’s a guy so he usually says $3-ish.  Well is it $3.19 or $3.99?  I usually end up rounding up to be on the safe side, but it’s frustrating.

One time I had him in charge of the calculator while we shopped.  Half-way through he looks up at me and it was like it’s gone.  What do you mean it’s gone?  He accidentally cleared out my total.  So we had to just kind of guess at what was in the cart and keep going.  I’m pretty sure we were right on the line that trip, but it ended up being okay.

I also don’t like having to keep track of my list and remember everything else you need to be getting.  I’ve worked on organizing my list better and I’m sharing that in my Tip Number One down below.  An organized list is your best friend when you don’t want to be grocery shopping.

I’ve come up with tips for sticking to your grocery budget for those really hard days.

Tip One:

Make your list into more of a game plan. I like to write out what I need then re-write it in order of the store. That way, I don’t have to scan my entire list when I’m in each aisle or back track. I’ve learned my Wal-Mart pretty well and know just about every aisle the items I need will be on.

That way I can start at the front door and only walk down the aisles I need to. Plus, my list goes in order so if I skip something then I know it’s because I couldn’t find it and I need to ask someone.

Tip Two:

Eat a snack before you go. If you’re headed there right after work then grab a snack. Nothing crazy or super filling, but something that will be enough to keep the hangry pains away.  Otherwise you might find that box of Little Debbie cakes in your cart and will have no recollection of putting it in there.  I also come up with crazy side dishes or snacks when I’m hungry.  At the time they sound amazing and super easy to prepare, but when I get home I never want them.  It’s a waste.

Tip Three:

Remember to use your money saving apps. They can really add up and help keep you on track with your budget.  I’m a big fan of Wal-Mart Savings Catcher since that’s where I do most of my shopping.

Tip Four:

Don’t spend forever in the store. Once you have your game plan in hand, then get going. Don’t stall or get side tracked by other items on the shelves. Get in, get your stuff, and get out.

Tip Five:

Use online options when possible. I order our dogs’ food from Amazon. Not only does it save me money, but it’s one less thing I have to hassle with at the store. There are a few household items I order online each month or so. The less I have to buy in store, the better.

What are your top tips for sticking to your grocery budget?

Easy Slow Cooker Ravioli

Easy Slow Cooker Ravioli Recipe

On a night that I know I’m going to be late, I always turn to my trusty slow cooker.  The other night I had a hair appointment that I desperately needed.  It may have been close to a year since my last haircut. A year, people!  That’s bad.  One of my favorite go-to slow cooker recipes are the ones that don’t take 8 hours to cook.

I mean, don’t get me wrong.  I do love an all day recipe.  The house always smells delicious and dinner is always perfect.  But sometimes it’s hard to remember to start dinner in the morning.  With being pregnant, my mind is falling apart.  I need a little help every once in awhile.  When I forget about having a long night then I need a dinner I can start on my lunch break.

I have discovered gold. Seriously! This is one of the best dinner recipes I have come across in a very, very long time.

I adapted this slow cooker ravioli recipe from The Country Cook.

I made it a little easier for me by making it only need 2 ingredients.

You can stick with the original, which is very good. I’ve made it before and we liked it, but I’m lazy and like to make it less work for me.

Here’s what you need for the easiest slow cooker ravioli recipe:

1) one bag of frozen ravioli (either cheese or beef will do – you could mix by doing 1/2 beef and 1/2 cheese)
2) 1 jar of pasta sauce
optional: garlic powder and pepper

You can use either white or red sauce with this recipe. It’s whatever your family prefers. I like lots of garlic flavoring, so I usually add about 1/4 teaspoon to my sauce along with some extra pepper.

Really the options are endless, you could add red pepper flakes, too. I’ve done that and it was still amazing.

Here’s how to prepare:

Put a Reynolds slow cooker liner in the crockpot

Place frozen ravioli in the slow cooker

Add sauce and extra seasonings

Stir to cover ravioli with sauce
Cook on low for 5 hours or high for 3 hours

That’s it. Super simple!

I usually serve mine with a little Italian bread and salad or extra veggies.

I don’t get paid to promote the slow cooker liners, but if you aren’t using them already, you have to start! They are lifesavers! Clean-up is so much easier with them.

I bought a dishwasher safe slow cooker so the pot could be washed, but by the time you add it in the dishwasher you don’t have room for anything else. So now with these liners I save my space in the dishwasher and don’t have to wash by hand.

Our Two Baby Showers

farm baby shower

The last two weekends have been amazing for J, myself and our little boy!  Our families are seriously the best.  My sister and best friend threw me a shower in our hometown for my side of the family and our friends.  Then the very next weekend my sister-in-law and mother-in-law threw us another shower for J’s side of the family and our friends in St. Louis.

We walked away knowing one thing is certain – this boy is sure going to be spoiled!

We were so incredibly lucky to receive all of our big gifts.  Now we just have to finish putting everything away and getting things out of boxes.  J put the crib together on Sunday while I was working on cleaning bottles and organizing the kitchen to give the baby’s stuff a little room.

One of J’s coworker’s and his wife got us one of the most practical gifts that I would never have thought of.  I mean, it’s so simple but I think it’s going to be a staple in all of my baby shower gifts from now on…. newborn laundry detergent.

Genius!

I was able to wash all of the blankets, onsies, socks, everything the very next day.  I didn’t have to wait until I ran to the store.  They are washed, dried and put away.  It was perfect!  I never even thought of it before.

Then the very next weekend my Mother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law threw Baby Boy another great shower.  We received so many goodies and as soon as we made the drive home I had J cutting tags and putting things together.  I was too excited to not put everything away in its place.

I guess they know my love of anything sweet. My MIL made my favorite cupcakes, red velvet and they matched the blue and silver colors of the decorations.  My SIL made a homemade ice cream cake… what!? Soo good!  I may have had a little bit of both.  They had a station setup to decorate a bib for Baby Boy, too.  I didn’t get any snaps of everyone decorating, but I am excited with how they turned out.  It was so smart and now the little one will have plenty of bibs to get him by.

I wanted to share a few pictures from both showers.  I had the best time celebrating little Baby Rines with everyone.
