We’ve Moved

Yep, the U-Haul is gone and (most) boxes have been unpacked.  This house is starting shape up and look a little bit more like a home.  J and I have even started hanging a few pictures on the walls.  I have a few ideas/crafts for a few pieces and I can’t wait to get those started.
The pups seem to love their new home, maybe it’s because they have a fenced-in yard to run in finally.  Tiny has been on bird duty since we arrived.  No bird will be flying into her territory anytime soon.  Funny story – at one of the last places we lived there was a fenced in yard.  One day we were all outside, I was sitting at the table working on the computer and J was grilling dinner.  I looked up after hearing a funny noise and saw Tiny prancing around with two little wings flapping outside of her mouth.  I panicked and started yelling for her to leave it.  She looked at me confused and spit out a little bird.  The poor guy was so dazed and it kind of wobbled around for a bit then took off.  I swear for weeks afterwards the birds would all line up on the edge of the fence and dive bomb Tiny.
J and I are going to do some landscaping to the front and back yards soon.  I can’t wait!  I’ll show off our cute little home soon.  I want to get the rest of the boxes unpacked and start working on a few of my projects.

The Start of a New Adventure

That’s right, tomorrow is the start of a new adventure for J and I.  I have been hinting around here for a few weeks about a big announcement.  No, it’s not that kind of announcement.  We aren’t bring a mini J and me into the world.  Every time we tell people that we have big news that is where their thoughts first go.  Then I followup with saying NO.  Let me chug a beer to prove it to you.  I know, I know, I’m so ladylike.
new adventure Drum roll please…. We are moving!  Yep, that’s right J and I are moving (again) to a new town.  Well it’s new for J, not for me.  I’m going home to the place I graduated high school from, learned to drive, had my first job, made one of the best friendships that have stood the test of time, and now the start of a new career.

An opportunity like this one doesn’t come around every day.  J and I decided to take a big leap into a future that we never imagined.  I am beyond excited to get home, get settled and begin.  J is putting on a brave front.  I think the idea of being far away from his family and close friends is pretty unappealing at the moment.  I, however, strongly believe that J will feel right at home in no time.  Something about him being more social and friendly then me.  Or perhaps it’s the fact J is the furthest thing away from a homebody and will force himself out making new friends.

Now you may be asking yourself – when are these crazy kids moving?  In a month?  Two months?  Nope.  We are moving tomorrow.  Our house is full of boxes and packing tape.  The poor pups have no idea what’s going on.  Our movers are coming to help us load up the truck and then we hit the open road tomorrow morning, bright and early.  We have a pretty little house waiting for us to make it a home.  I love new beginnings.

Tips To Getting Settled In A New Home

settling into a new homeJ and I have been in our new home for almost 2 weeks now.  We have been slowly unpacking and getting settled in.  I have to admit that only having 2 weeks to pack our old home and get moved has made me a little less motivated when it comes to unpacking.  Is that bad?

Our new place is great and I am starting to get familiar with how to get around.  I started thinking that the previous tenants did not finish out their lease at our place and I kind of think it was by the landlord’s choice, but that’s just the feeling I get because I have no proof.  When we came to view the place he was changing the locks, which is normal, but then he mentioned that he likes a lease to end around May so that he can have the summer to get the place ready.  Next, he complained about damage to the carpets and how he was not prepared to change the flooring throughout the place.  Finally, the nails were still in the walls.  I went through after the first few days and noticed there were nails in the walls, so I decided to go through and spackle.  I probably removed over 30 nails and covered 60 holes in the walls!  No lie!  I guess the previous tenants didn’t measure and center BEFORE hammering the nail into the wall.

Okay, I’m getting off on my investigation tangent.  This post was about 5 great tips to get settled into a new home.  Here we go:

1) unpack your bedroom first.  Having a nice, clean bed to climb into after moving is a GREAT feeling.

2) unpack the kitchen next.  Then you can return to eating normal sooner.  You are able to cook, grab a glass of water, and just sit down without being surrounding by boxes.

3) hang pictures last.  I always wait to all the boxes are unpacked and the rest of the shelves are decorated then I gather all my pictures and paintings in one spot to look through.  That way I can decide how to gather pictures and hang them based on my entire collection.

4) get rid of boxes as soon as they are empty.  It’s a great feeling to see less and less boxes in a room.  Don’t keep empty ones laying around because that will just make you feel overwhelmed.

5) let people help.  I had a problem with this one, let me tell you.  No one knows how I like my kitchen set up, no one knows what beauty products I use on a daily basis and want within arms length.  It’s true, no one knows how you want everything setup other than you.  But it’s a new home, you do not even know the place for everything.  So, let people help you unpack boxes.  You can always rearrange later and the best part is you will not be tripping over boxes while you move things around.

Spilling the Beans

spilling the beans

At the beginning of this week I talked about some changes coming and now I can finally spill the beans…

Drumroll please….J and I are moving! We are leaving Southwest Missouri and heading 3 hours away. J took a new job and we had 2 weeks to make the big move. GULP! 2 weeks to pack our whole place … This past weekend we went up, found a place that we love and then asked all of our friends to help. I have to admit I have been a packing fool and have made huge progress in getting ready. I think J is a little impressed with my organization skills this time around.

spilling the beans

I do have to admit, I am a bit nervous about moving. I’ve lived in Southwest Missouri for the past 7 years and before that I had never lived anywhere but my hometown. The new city is much, much bigger – more highways to navigate around, less friends nearby, and a whole new experience. I get butterflies in my stomach when I think that it’s actually happening. I just cannot believe it.

Want to know the best part? I will be less than 2 hours away from my folks, my sister and less than 15 minutes from J’s family. Plus, my grandma will be about 45 minutes away. It’s going to be so nice to have family so close… I mean, I could drive home for the day and it not be a 6 hour car ride, roundtrip. Yes!

Here’s to the next chapter in our lives!
