The LAST first day of class

me

Ok, here I go.  I’m about to embark on my first day of class for the last time.  That’s right, after this fall semester my graduate school career will be over.

Kind of nerve racking to think that school is almost done.

Also, it’s nerve racking to think about the projects, tests that are about to come my way all while holding down 2 jobs.

I can do it.  I can handle anything for a few months.  I can do it.

During grad school, I’ve learned a few things:

1) I actually did absorb some information during undergrad

2) It’s really important to come to every class period, unlike undergrad

3) The saying that you learn more while doing is true – I cannot explain all of the real-life concepts I understand now by having a job in management

4) Make friends.  And then more importantly – keep them.  They will come in handy during the classes that are more challenging.  For instance, finance.  That was a tough one.

Pretty much sums it up…

“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes … the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. … You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things. … They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

The behind-the-scenes bio:

I’m a lover of God, a wife, a boy mom and dog mom. I wear many hats in my life and I treat each one with gratitude. I wrote a whole post about what you may not know about me so you can get a feel for who I am.

I Wanted To Understand More

Years ago my husband and I were just starting out.  We were living in a townhouse that had seen better days.  We longed for a day where we wouldn’t hear our neighbors through paper thin walls.  More importantly, we wanted a place where our dogs could finally roam in the backyard without a chain and we had room to grow.  But we had no clue how we were going to get there.

My husband was making decent money for the time, but I wasn’t.  I had a 30 minute commute to a mediocre job that paid less than mediocre.  We were getting by, but barely.  Sure we had enough to put food in the fridge, but heaven forbid one of cars broke down because we would have been out of luck.  I remember we would sit on our couch with our laptop open to our online banking.  We would be subtracting the bills that hadn’t come out yet to see just how much we could afford at the grocery store that week.  Sometimes we were right, but other weeks we would forget a bill and end up overdrafting our account.

It was stressful.  We just never felt like we were going to rise above it.

I knew I couldn’t and wouldn’t live my life like that for the next 15 to 20 years.  Heck! I wasn’t going to live like that for the next 5!

We came up with a plan.  We started budgeting our money before we paid any bills.  We built an emergency fund to take some of the pressure off our bank account.  We stopped relying so heavily on bonuses we weren’t promised to make ends meet and cut things out that we knew we didn’t have to have.

After a few months we noticed a difference.  We no longer had to check our bank account before going to the store.  Our bills didn’t hurt like they used to and we were happier.

We finally realized we were making progress and we liked it!

I started blogging to share what I had found with others.  I knew if we were struggling then someone else had to be too.

Now it’s been several years and a lot has changed.  We moved to a new (my hometown) city so I can pursue a career helping small business owners build their dreams.  As of today we have paid off over $40,000 worth of debt in under 3 years.

As I grew and developed, I realized many of my clients were small business owners trying to make it.  They understood how to budget their personal money, but they were treading water when it came to their business finances.  That’s when Bookkeeping By Meredith was created.  It was a place to help new business owners learn how to keep their records in order, budget for their business, and start making progress towards their goals.
